This being no ordinary tongue, the resulting photo became an instant classic, thus ensuring that the distinguished Novel Prize-winner would be remembered as much for his personality as for his brain.
As with any such lists, one can quibble around the edges. I fully expected it to include the 1972 photo of the napalmed Vietnamese girl Phan Thi Kim Phuc, mercifully reduced here.I think I've never seen number ten, a portrait of Salvador Dali with live, flying cats and buckets of water. But it was fun to see that and one by Man Ray included in a list that one would expect to be all photojournalism.
